As we begin 2011, we are better prepared than ever to acquire the knowledge we need to continue our existence, or to snuff it out completely via our natural tendency to destroy the wonderful things we've created. Take a look at the picture below - it's a galaxy, just like the one we live in. It contains over 100 billion stars, with millions of main-sequence suns just like our own .

The universe we live in contains 100s of billions of galaxies. The image below was the result of the Hubble Space Telescope peering into a 1-inch section of the sky... and look what it found.

Countless galaxies with countless suns, and countless possibilities. How many civilizations like our own have risen and fallen over the 14 billion years of the universe's existence, and what is our fate as a species? We're running out of time, as Earth's resources are stretched thin to accomodate our insatiable need to consume and thrive. Science - our only saving grace - is quietly put on a back-burner while politicians and elitists attempt to solve our problems with their own twisted views regarding religion, ethics, and morality - which has only led us to conflict. Too many of us fail to see the big picture, that the universe is a terribly vicious place and we are extremely lucky to exist.

We are unfortunately squandering that existence, and time is very quickly beginning to run out.
